Rained down with the meteors Third storm in as many days A sense of loss, a sense of the void Set out on a darkened path The drenching essence had many ways Imposed its sense while demanding praise Covered Earth secretly in glorified misery Took away from the free all the choice and instinct Made them bleed, made new creeds, made them see through their dreams Made blank slates, designed self rape, subconsciously Before human consciousness, before the bright dawn Before civilized notions had been self-righteously spawned Waiting to be unleashed, building strength to release its decree Of resentment, of torture, of hatred as unity An unknown birth somewhere in the desert of the first zeitgeist The first consciousness to bear the mark of the mind heist Any symbol carved into the flesh could eventually be seen So a branding of new character had to suffice And like rats the beliefs did breed From the womb of discomfort came the disciples They, the future-less Spread far and wide, new leaders came and died And the remnants of the spiritual plague further corrupted human kind The ears who heard the essence proselytize Ensured it would survive Naivety made them easy to control All blind men wander between flashes of lightning never seen Never finding Covered Earth secretly in glorified misery Took away from the free all the choice and instinct Made them bleed, made new creeds, made them see through their dreams Made blank slates, designed self rape, subconsciously
2.
Drenched in invisible blood and begging for freedom of self Just another victim of commodity with no reason to fear nature Absorbed in a nurturing abyss, one where pain cannot persist Constant defensiveness of a moral revisionist He who gave light to the future-less Seeing things that cannot be seen Allowed fear to turn to belief And ask for forgiveness of deeds That cannot be obscene. Ripe fruit for the malnourished Something else to consume Yet even there, where most were starving A new tree with new seeds would bloom He who would resist the light Adversarial knowledge in the mind of the man Who once sought to be led by the brightness Embraced pain, stopped begging for freedom of self And gave birth to a darkened self likeness Birth of a shadow took place on a mountain Where the enlightened man lived in secrecy Forsaking the future-less, he turned his back Realized their need for obedience

Time burned off the face, cycled into place Colossal arms race, Ouroborus like chase Sides stood still wanting collapse or breadth Men took sides wanting new heights or depths Unconcerned with their own life or tomb What fell from the sky fully consumed And the bombs reigned down And the heavens roared And the oceans quaked From the death knell’s chord “Forward! No one can stop our progress” “Forward! We want more, they will have less” “Forward! We have reason on our side” “Forward! Belief, not reason, can’t die” The future-less claimed God was at their side Those of the mountain only knew self pride No surprise, those with God wanted blood Those without had blood that couldn’t abide “Forward! Make alterations in law” “Forward! They seek to alter the law” “Forward! No progress in moral law” “Forward! We are chosen under law” The future-less claimed God was at their side Those of the mountain only knew self pride No surprise, those with God wanted blood Those without had blood that couldn’t abide Rank and file Foot war, land war, airborne disease Mankind beguiled Nature, belief, philosophy Controlled, possessed, obedient, dichotomized. Controlled, possessed, obedient, dichotomized. Power and the rise to power told man of his greatest hour Of fire filled skies and smoke that chokes Of enemies born to cower The future-less claimed God was at their side Those of the mountain only knew self pride No surprise, those with God wanted blood Those without had blood that couldn’t abide

His eyes scan the scenery Desolation, starvation, mainly corpses remain Attempting to find his enemy To knife the heart of symbiosis He has lost his family Sacrifice of the will of the adversary Now he searches for the cause of the struggle To knife the heart of symbiosis To beat to death the essence Cleanse the collective mind Purify loves conflagration Reset all time “If it burns you then it will burn me It must leave for all eternity Even though these things cycle back into place I must see the future freely” “I gave you everything, gave you brightness Saved you from yourself and your blindness You repaid me, betrayed me, plotted against me All for fear of much needed slavery?” “Now kneel! Pray, beg for mercy at the expense of all who may ever live” Now finding his creator His knife first finds his throat He has lost his everything Sacrificed for self sufficiency Now he searches for the life of the struggle To knife the heart of symbiosis To beat to death the essence Cleanse the collective mind Purify loves conflagration Reset all time

Never meant for the healthy flesh It exits the mind of its most recent vessel, a decaying trestle Perhaps designed for the pervasive flesh Of a dying man or a wounded beast on which it must feast But not designed for the adversary Oh, how the predator must seek! How it craves to create guilt in organic beings, faith over seeing Undergoing the evolution of decay The advancement of rust The forward progress of decline The backwards of all time The erosion of the mind Undergoing the evolution of decay The acquisition of rot Transformation of the caught From the will of why they fought Into something they are not Cycling ad naseum It enters new minds and what free thought it can find Is suffocated by the strength of foreign might This intrusive force seems to coerce Man down from the freedom of natural height With guilt, with fear, with prayer, with rape It enters new minds and what free thought it can find Is suffocated by the strength of foreign might This intrusive force seems to coerse Man down from the freedom of natural height With guilt, with fear, with prayer, with rape With force, with will, with intent to undermine With intent to undermind It matters not his past, his future is planned And a new betrayer will need to attack Now where can it land if there can be no end? What beast of the flesh will perpetuate its will? It matters not his past, his future is planned And a new betrayer will need to attack
6.
Too severe for the multitude The plurality and dualism evades their time Their smiles, their shells, their divine husks Where the mountain bound evade their life With their height, their sagacity, their downward glare Their forward gaze into future history In praise of the abyss that destroys inward misery Forever defeating and rebirthing a nemesis His epoch burned by the fires of servitude New betrayer fights the flame Moments of peace passed, vengeance accrued Not content to be a slave Alien provenance, crux of immortal feuds Demands those who betray Such height, such sagacity, such downward glares Unto the mass, unto the blindly possessed From those free of the essence, free from deceit Defeating and rebirthing the spiritual nemesis His epoch burned by the fires of servitude New betrayer fights the flame Moments of peace passed, vengeance accrued Not content to be a slave Alien provenance, crux of immortal feuds Demands those who betray Those who abandon the promises of faith Who deny the clean slate state born of a knave Where nature and order tranquilly pervade Where all are always prey but never slaves Biting hands that feed the mouth the poison that weakens the body Stabbing backs of the hands that birth eras of thralls deemed godly For future blood, forthcoming flesh, inevitable means and subsequent ends It began amongst the meteors before the dawn of man With a symbiont incongruous with the species of the land When uninvaded they stood defiant, when weakened they all remain Living underneath great heights and building up their strength Cycling infinitely but gaining the pride of collective experience Can the untainted ever rise to keep their heights?

about

Written and recorded by Rory Heikkila on garbage equipment over the course of 5 months. Punch ins on first guitar were generally not permitted. Lyrically this album is much different than anything Shroud of Despondency has done in the past. The approach to the lyrics centered more on a fictional scenario concerning how religion/spirituality came to dominate the thought processes of human beings and, of course, how certain other types decided to rebel against it. The lyrics also deal with the cyclical nature of such conflicts, the ebb and flow contained in the eternal jostling for power over human consciousness and will. It is, in a sense, the first Shroud of Despondency release that does not see spirituality as easily defeated by individual strength. Instead it is seen more as a pesky little symbiotic relationship which, in spite of any tendencies towards resistance a minority may have, has an advantage over freedom and nature.
